Dog Training Advice That Will Ensure
You And Your dog Stay Together.
When
you look at your dog do you understand why
it is that you may be having dog training problems?
Chances are that your current dog training problems have occurred
as the direct result of your own belief systems. For reasons that you
may not fully understand you may have come to believe that dogs need to
be lured with food, restrained with head halters, or physically punished
each time they do something wrong.
The great truth about dog training is extremely simply, yet profoundly
complicated at the same time. Until you are able to alter your own
belief systems you will be unable to resolve the dog training problems
you are now having.
The Pygmalion Effect
The Pygmalion Effect is based on Greek mythology. Pygmalion, who was the
king of Cyprus, carved an ivory statue of the perfect woman, whom he
named Galatea. With the help of Venus, and his own loving belief,
Galatea was brought to life. In short, the Pygmalion Effect is the
belief that we will usually get what we expect.
In 1968, Dr. Robert Rosenthal did the following experiment to test the
validity of the Pygmalion Effect. At an elementary school, teachers were
given the names of students who had been identified as those with high
intellectual abilities. The teachers were told to expect more from these
students. In reality, the students were chosen at random. After eight
months, however, the students who had been identified as the "brightest"
did in fact have higher increases in their achievement scores than those
who had been identified as average. The high expectations of the
teachers had resulted in higher achievement by the students. It is
believed that the students were given more attention and that the
teachers' behaviors likely produced increased student confidence as well
as a desire by students to study and do well.
Similarly, in dog training classes where the instructor uses food lures
to shape puppy behavior, the puppies as well as the human students often
develop a 'food lure dependence'. This dependence is often so strong
that many trainers actually mistake their own self imposed beliefs as
actual dog behavior.
Learning To See Things Clearly
Changing our personal belief systems is perhaps one of the most
challenging endeavors we can experience, particularly when these beliefs
involve politics, religion, children and dogs.
During the 1980s thousands of dog trainers abandoned harsh training
methods because they were presented with more humane puppy training
alternatives. These "crossover" trainers abandoned their choke-chains
and shock-collars and embraced methods that relied heavily on
food-lures. Why did such a migration from "firm" to "food" take place?
Because a handful of influential trainers presented the dog
training community with better information.
"Better information"; what does that mean? In the context of this
article, "better information" simply means that arguments to support new
thinking were better than the arguments that supported harsher dog
training methods.
Once upon a time dog trainers believed that puppies needed to be hurt
as a means to teach respect. As a result of these belief systems,
puppies needed to be jerked around as a means to establish control. When
society believed that puppies were inherently stubborn, puppies acted in
a stubborn way.

Today much has changed, but The Pygmalion Effect still rings true. Puppy
trainers now believe that most puppies need to be lured with food, and
as a result, puppy owners are instructed to carry bags of treats
wherever they go. Strangers are advised to give puppies treats as a
means to establish friendship, and most pet stores carry at least five
different types of puppy training treats.
All of this said, now that most trainers worship the all mighty
"clicker", the tool of choice for trainers who use treats, can there be
any wonder why your puppy will work better when you lure it with a
treat. After all, if your belief system is, "dogs work better for food",
then you will raise your dog with methods that make your beliefs come
true.
What Happened To Your Dreams?
Food lure training as well as coercive puppy training methods often
trivialize the glorious union between pets and people. Food or Force
methods are often damaging to our puppies because they allow us to
develop belief systems that do not serve us or our puppies well.
Most new puppy owners enter the world of puppy training with big dreams.
Do you remember thinking that your puppy would respond to you because he
loves you? Do you remember thinking how nice it would be to take your
puppy for long, off leash walks in your city’s central park? What has
become of your dreams?
►
You wanted your puppy to listen to your voice, but now you need a bag of
food treats to get any attention.
►
You wanted serene off-leash walks. Now you have your puppy on a head
harness and if you set him free in a public place he will fight or run
away.
What happened?
Somewhere between where you started and where you are now, you found
faith in some puppy training belief that is not serving you well. Rather
than learning to hold onto your best puppy owner dreams, you adopted
puppy training methods that have simply allowed you to cope with a
multitude of training problems.
