ear Puppywishes,  love your website. I have visited your site several times over the past two years, but this is the first time I have come as a puppy owner. I need help!  I currently have my puppy enrolled with a reputable puppy training school, but whenever I take my puppy into the class she starts to jump up on everyone. Last night during class she jumped up on a larger dog and that larger dog attacked her. The trainer said that it was my puppy's fault, and that I should 'step on my puppy's toes' whenever she jumps up. I tried this technique (toe stepping), once and my puppy started screaming in pain. My question is: how do I step on my puppy's toes without causing her pain? Is there something I am missing about this puppy training technique? Your advice would be greatly appreciated." Dear Melissa:

My-oh-my, dear Melissa. I believe that you are asking the wrong question. So let's revise it now. Your question should be changed from, "How do I step on my puppy's toes without causing her pain?" to, "Should I be using this toe-stepping puppy training method at all?"

On some level most puppy owners realize, even if they don't act on their realization, that puppies should not be jumping up on people. Many people feel this way because they can see what a mess dogs make when they jump up with dirty feet. Also, some dogs are large, giant, humongous, and the notion of them jumping on people whenever they want to say "hello" is. . . well, bombastically-rude!  But there are also a number of other important reasons why puppies should keep their paws on the ground, and these reasons are far more important than most people realize.

You are not a sidewalk, a door mat, or any other kind of low laying surface that your puppy can walk all over. While it may seem that your puppy is jumping up in a playful fit of innocent exuberance, don't be fooled. Puppies are smarter than you think and they often use body contact to gain the upper hand.

Also, as for the toe-stepping method. Forget it. If you keep stepping on your puppy's paws, it will grow up and attack your feet.
