Help!  I Think My Dog Is Aggressive!

his is a topic that is very near and dear to our hearts. It is an important topic, because nowhere in the world of dogs have more people suffered than here. Here is where people's homes, hearts and bodies become broken. Here is where life is lost, sadness takes over, and people fall into despair.

If you own a dog that fights or bites, then you understand the feeling of impending hurt all too well. It is almost like an unwanted ghost has taken hold of your heart and won't let go. The fear that your dog will one day hurt someone is a fear that can haunt you day and night. This fear is compounded by the awful notion that you may need to euthanize your own dog. Not because he is sick. Not because he is old. Not even because he is hurt. You may need to take his life because it seems impossible to control his behavior.

Finding Your Support

The world is a wonderful place, filled with people who deliver great miracles. Some of these people work in medicine, education, agriculture, and construction. They bring us pain relief, heightened intelligence, food to eat, and homes to live in. Where you find great human need, you will also find great support.

In the world of dogs there is often a need for heroes. We sometimes need veterinarians who will work for love, not money.  We need animal shelter workers who can keep depressed dogs energized. And we need dog trainers who are willing to journey on the roads less traveled.

If you own a dog that bites and fights, we would like to take this time to offer you our support. We are the trainers who journey along the road less traveled, and we are here to give you a well-deserved hug. We know that you may have been walking alone for too long, carrying a dog problem that you desperately want solved. We are here to lighten your burden, provide helpful answers, and hopefully, help you save your dogs life.

Overdue Answers To Long-Standing Questions

"I appreciate your willingness to help, but can my dog really be trained?"

Dealing with unwanted canine aggression is not a 'training' issue. When you think of 'training' you automatically think of ways to control your dog.  The truth is that you cannot control your dog's aggression, rather, your dog must learn to control itself.  'Training', in this capacity, will probably not resemble anything you have experienced before. In fact, effective treatment for aggressive dogs is so unlike traditional training that we can hardly call it training at all. So, to answer your question; there is a high probability that your dog will improve with proper guidance, but this guidance will not come in the form of traditional obedience training.

"Why must my dog control itself? Please explain."

Traditional dog training teaches people how to control their dogs with five obedience commands; sit, stay, come, down, and heel.  In order for these commands to work, the owner must be present to give a command, and the dog must be in the right frame of mind to listen.

Traditional training often fails because owners spend less than 10% of their time giving dogs commands. And when they do give commands, it is generally because their dogs are misbehaving and are not in the correct frame of mind to listen. When commands are not being issued, which is 90% of the time, traditionally trained dogs often regress into undesirable behavior.

Problems with temperamental dogs do not arise when they are sitting attentively, or in some other way working for the owner. Disaster strikes when owners let down their guard. For this reason, it is essential that your dog learns to maintain safe, socialble behavior, even when their owners are not watching.

"My dog is extremely loving most of the time. When he attacks he is like a different dog. Can dogs suffer from split personality disorders?"

No, we don't believe they can.

Dogs, like people, have moods. Some very friendly people become violent when they get upset, so much so that they are hardly recognizable. Does this mean they have "split personality disorder?" Of course not. They lack the behavioral discipline to control their actions when emotions run high.

Your dog's aggression is always present, even though he may not be attacking all of the time. Think of an alcoholic for a moment. Consider how the alcoholism is forever present, even when the alcoholic is not drinking. If you can understand this concept, then you have taken a giant step towards helping your dog.

Although you may not always see what troubles your dog, the trouble is there, just beneath the surface, waiting to boil over.  When the aggression does surface, although it may appear to be a different dog, you are still dealing with the same pet.

A Letter From A Concerned Parent

"Dear Puppywishes, My children and I have a serious puppy training problem: we are frightened of our puppy. Several weeks ago he started growling. At first it was only when he was playing, but he soon started growling at us for other things. When we try to move him he will growl and nip at us. He will also growl and bite if we attempt to touch him while he is eating. It has gotten so bad that we are now afraid to put his leash on.

My husband is threatening to take our puppy to the pound. He is just five months old. Kato is a large Tibetan Mastiff; he is a beautiful dog and very loving most of the time. Last night my six year old son asked me if Kato was going to eat him. I said no, but I am not sure what this dog is capable of doing. I attended a training class that used treats to teach everything, and that made the problem worse. I also had a trainer come to the house, but she had less control over the dog than we do, and our control is nonexistent! How can I train a puppy like this? Do you offer a special puppy training program for puppies like mine? I would appreciate any help.  Thank you." (Kate)

Dear Kate:

Unwanted canine aggression is the leading cause of death in dogs under one year of age! The hard truth is that there is very little room in modern society for dogs that hurt people. Dangerous dog legislation continues to swell, and in many cities it is a CRIMINAL OFFENCE when dogs hurt people. That means you can go to jail as a direct result of your dog's aggressive behavior.

Growling, nipping, biting, and attacking other dogs are all valid reasons to be deeply concerned. If your dog is showing any one, or a combination of these behaviors, you need to take dramatic action now!

Far too often, people deal with aggressive puppies as if the problem were not serious. This is a great mistake, perhaps the greatest, because relatively harmless puppies are allowed to develop into formidable threats. If your puppy bites, growls and fights and is over six months of age, we may have the perfect solution to your problem.
